ASTECO driving the energy transition: an integrated system to improve the energy efficiency of a cattle farm

By 18 September 2026No Comments

For over twenty years, ASTECO S.r.l. has been developing energy solutions based on its clients’ specific needs. The project for L’Aggiunta Società Agricola Semplice, a cattle farm in Gioia del Colle, required the integration of expertise gained in thermohydraulic and energy systems.

For the farm, the priority is to ensure the energy required for the continuity of the production process and the day-to-day management of the facility. With operations covering more than 800 hectares, annual energy consumption reaches approximately 709,000 kWh. In addition, 20,000 litres of hot water at temperatures of up to 80 °C are required every day for feeding the calves.

The real challenge for ASTECO S.r.l. was to coordinate different technologies in order to make energy available in the required quantity, in the required form and at the required time, while ensuring continuity and reliability.

By listening to the client’s needs and analysing the production process, the engineering solution took shape: an integrated system comprising:

  • Photovoltaic system: 598.97 kWp, 1,346 modules and an estimated annual energy yield of approximately 730,000 kWh.
  • BESS: 290.3 kWh.
  • Heating plant: 4 R290 air-to-water monobloc heat pumps, with a total capacity of 108 kWth, 93.2 m² of solar thermal collectors and 20,000 litres of storage capacity.
  • Electric mobility: 22 kW charging system.
  • Backup: 2 LPG condensing boilers with a combined capacity of 320 kWth.

The technologies are operated as a single system through automatic energy management, which coordinates energy production, storage and supply according to the farm’s production requirements.

The results of the project are reflected in the available data. On the electrical side, the amount of energy drawn from the grid has been reduced by approximately 67%. On the thermal side, the amount of fuel required to produce the same quantity of hot water has been reduced by approximately 80% compared with relying exclusively on fossil fuels.

The benefits go beyond the figures: the farm can rely on a single, intelligent energy infrastructure capable of optimising the use of available energy, supporting production continuity and reducing dependence on external energy sources.

For ASTECO S.r.l., tackling complex projects means putting expertise and experience at the service of the client, going beyond standard solutions. Listening, analysing, designing and managing: this is the meaning of the energy transition and the approach the company adopts to address new challenges.
